04. Laundry Days

HappyFace1886

Yachi struggled a bit with the heavy load of damp clothes in her arms. It was laundry day for the training camp and all the managers had gathered together to complete their duties. Since the day was nice and sunny outside, it was decided that they’d go hang out the clothes to dry under the sun. Karasuno didn’t have many members, so Shimizu-sempai had reassured Yachi about keeping focused on the Nekoma team’s clothes instead.

The tiny blonde let out a small sigh once she’d lowered the basket onto the ground, stretching backwards a bit to relieve her sore lower back. Due to her small stature, carrying heavy things were a little more difficult than for others. Not that she had much to complain about! Everyone was working diligent on their given tasks.

She reached down to pick up the first article of clothing only to stiffen and blush when she realized it was Kuroo-san’s jacket. Yachi warily picked it up and stared at it, remembering all too clearly how she’d worn it just a few nights ago. Looking at it again, the size difference was still amazing. Most of the volleyball players certainly were on the tall side...

“Oooh? If it isn’t little Yacchan from Karasuno?”

With a timid squeak, Yachi pressed the jacket close to her chest as she turned around. Her vision immediately saw a soft shade of red and lazily playful auburn eyes. She immediately recognized her as the senior manager for the Fukurodani team. “Shirofuku-san!”

“Yo,” the older girl giggled slightly, her arms occupied with her own share of clean laundry. “So what’s that you got there?”

Yachi looked down and almost threw the jacket away when she realized it was Kuroo-san’s jersey. “A-Ah, j-just some laundry I was about to hang up.”

“Any particular reason why you were hugging that one jacket like that just now?” Yukie asked slyly.

“E-Eh! I-I didn’t mean to! I-I mean-.”

Yukie laughed harder this time. “There’s no need to be so timid, Yacchan. I was just teasing you.”

Yachi returned her laughter with a nervous one of her own. “I-I see...”

“So, tell me, I heard an interesting rumor,” Yukie sauntered closer towards her and set her basket on the floor. She picked up one of the jersey’s and shook it a bit, reaching for one of the pins to hang the clothes on the line. “Apparently Karasuno went a bit crazy with the offense against Fukurodani and Nekoma today because of a certain incident that happened last night.”

“E-Eh?!” oh god, she didn’t want to hear where this topic was heading!

“So what exactly did the boys do to you that had even the ever composed Kiyoko-san in a tizzle?” Yukie inquired with a coy smile. It seemed innocent enough, but Yachi had seen enough covertly dangerous looks from her mother to know when someone had something underhanded in mind. Though, instinctively, Yachi felt that the danger wasn’t aimed towards her. Based on her observation of Shirofuku-san and Bokuto-san, the older girl was probably going to lay on the pain if she found out that Bokuto-san had done something unsightly.

“A-Ano... i-it was nothing! It was all just a misunderstanding!”

“If it’s just a misunderstanding, I’m sure you wouldn’t mind sharing it with me then,” Yukie continued innocently.

Yachi’s lips trembled as she desperately sought a way out of this. Unfortunately, it was obvious she’d been outmaneuvered by the more experienced sneaky girl. It wasn’t long until she was stuttering out the story of how Kuroo-san had lent her his jacket a few nights ago and because of her rather small physique, the boys had found it hilarious in seeing her wear their jerseys. Tsukishima just had the luck of walking in when she was trying on Bokuto-san’s jacket.

There was a pause before uncontrolled laughter filled the air. Yukie clutched onto her stomach at the hilarious mental image of Bokuto and some of the other boys looking at Yachi with sparkling eyes akin to a little kid that’d learned something new and awesome, apparently in awe over how someone so close to their age can still be so tiny. It certainly sounded like him. The boys mostly seemed to have just volleyballs in their brain (not to mention, too busy with sports and school, to actually have a love life) and were probably too accustomed to ridiculously tall and strong people around them, so it wasn’t surprising to hear them being so intrigued at how small Yachi was compared to them.

Though, Yukie mentally noted, it wasn’t as though one would mistaken Yachi for a grade-schooler. She was short, but there were still small hints of feminine grace and curves that made it clearer that she was older than her height indicated, which was probably why she never really encountered as many comments about her being a little kid... unlike two certain short Karasuno members whose behavior was more akin of an elementary student. Bokuto was a close second to them, but his height gave his age away.

“Say,” Yukie said playfully towards the rapidly paling Yachi. She had a bad feeling about this. “Why don’t you try on that jacket you have in your hand?”

Yachi’s eyes whipped towards Kuroo-san’s jacket and then looked at the older girl in horror. “E-Eh?!”

“Haha, well the guys seemed so interested in seeing you wear their clothes, so you can’t blame me for wanting to see as well. C’mon, just try it on just once! It’ll be just a secret between you and me,” Yukie coaxed with a wink.

“B-But it’s K-K-Kuroo-san’s jacket and it’d be r-rude to wear it without permission.”

“Well if you ask me,” Yukie said with her hands in her hips, “he gave you explicit permission to wear it already. Though based on what you told me about the night at the convenience store, it almost sounds like he only wants you to wear his jacket.”

Yachi’s eyes goggled at that and she almost fainted at how quickly the blood rushed to her face. She had been so flustered at being interrogated by Shirofuku-san that she had spilled literally all the details of what had happened... still, Shirofuku-san was probably just teasing again... Kuroo-san had probably wanted her to wear his jacket so that Yamamoto-san and Lev-san would leave her alone.

And besides...

“Yachi-san, Yachi-san, wear my jacket next!” Lev cried out the moment she took off Bokuto-san’s jacket. The ace of Fukurodani, meanwhile, was arguing with Tsukishima that he wasn’t a perv and that it was genuine, legitimate curiosity that made him ask Yachi to wear his jacket. The fact that she’d looked ridiculously cute wearing it had nothing to do with it since, according to Bokuto, being cute was just a part of her! A line which promptly made Tsukishima remark that that just meant that Bokuto was a perv down to the core instead.

“L-Lev-san!” she squeaked, taking a step back when the overly enthusiastic boy held up his jersey for her to accept. Oh god, it looked really big! It was worse than the time she’d worn Kuroo-san’s jacket. He hadn’t been joking when he said that it was likely his jacket would fall to her knees.

“Ow!” Lev yelped when there was sharp smack on the back of his head. He looked backwards with tears gathering in his eyes. “Kuroo-sempai...”

“Enough fooling around. Leave her alone.” Kuroo grunted with a volleyball pressed on his shoulder. He then narrowed his eyes, giving Lev a sinister smile that had both Lev and Yachi trembling in fear. “Let’s get back to practice, shall we?”

“If anything, I think I made Kuroo-san angry for interfering with practice,” Yachi protested weakly, remembering the... er... torture Lev went through for the rest of the evening.

Yukie could only laugh at her forlorn expression. “Trust me. Kuroo won’t mind. Try it on!”

“B-But-.”

“Heeey, what’s going on here?” the two looked up to see blue-grey eyes peering at them from afar, the manager in training for Fukurodani making her way towards them while carrying the other set of clean laundry for the team. Kaori gave an interested grin at the two girls.

“I’m just trying to get Yacchan to wear Kuroo’s jacket.” Yukie casually explained with a gleaming gaze that Kaori immediately picked up on.

“Oh? Why Kuroo-san’s? If we’re going by size, Lev-san would be much better!” Kaori said mischievously and Yachi knew then and there that she was alone against these two crafty ladies. “Ahhh, Yachi-san, you’d look so cute wearing Lev-san’s jacket because of how tiny you are.”

“B-But-!”

“Or why not wear Bokuto’s jacket again first? Don’t worry, since we’re dealing with the laundry, they shouldn’t complain if someone else wears it once or twice. Besides, he’s the one who made you wear it yesterday anyways.” Yukie said with a careless wave.

Yachi looked ready to continue protesting, but knew it was lost cause due to the determined glint in their eyes. It was how she’d also fallen under the excited gazes of Bokuto-san and Lev-san the night before. Her shoulders slumped and she began to reluctantly put on Kuroo-san’s jacket, her cheeks already flushed at the fact that she was wearing it again.

“So cute!” Kaori squealed. It was so hard to believe that they were the same age. Yachi-san was so small compared to her! “Neh, neh, try on Bokuto-san’s jacket next!”

“Hey, what’s going on?” Yachi almost cried when she saw the other managers coming along with their own loads of clean laundry.

“We’re getting Yacchan to try on the guy’s jackets!” Yukie supplied cheerfully.

“Ooh! Let us in on that!!”

Yachi mentally bided her dignity farewell and obediently began to put on the jackets one by one, the other girls marveling and cooing at how big they were and how adorable Yachi looked swimming in all of them. It was a scene that Shimizu ended up walking in on, her steps coming to a halt as she stared with slightly widened eyes at Yachi currently donning Lev’s Nekoma team jacket this time. Since they’d gone through the entire rotation of teams, the girls were now trying to find which size looked the cutest on her.

“What’s going on here?” Shimizu inquired quietly.

“Heeey Shimizu-san,” Yukie greeted with her hand raised, a lazy smile lingering on her lips. “We’re just having a little fun with your kouhai here. Hope you don’t mind.”

“Ah, no,” Shimizu shook her head. “As long as Hitoka-chan is okay with it, I don’t mind.”

Yachi wanted to cry that that. Shimizu-san was so beautiful and kind! All forms of protest were immediately swallowed up and Yachi bravely posed with Lev’s jacket, earning a giggle from the other girls.

“Thanks for indulging us, Yachi-chan,” Eri, from Ubugawa Highi, said with a sheepish grin.

“Yup, yup, that was a nice reprieve from our domestic chores, I’d say,” Mako, from Shinzen High, said while stretching. She looked at their piles of clean laundry waiting to be hung and rolled up her sleeves to her shoulders. “Let’s get to it, shall we, ladies?”

There was a chorus of agreements as everyone began to carry their loads to their respective laundry lines. Yachi shyly glanced beside her where Shimizu-sempai was, internally excited that Karasuno and Nekoma were right next to each other. It was always so nice to see her beautiful reliable sempai, though Yachi was doing her best to become independent so that Shimizu-sempai would have nothing to worry about once graduation came along.

...a thought which Yachi immensely depressed... thinking about it, this would really be the last year for the third years. Yachi mentally shook her head. No, that was why they had to do their best to succeed! That was what Hinata and the others were doing their best on and something Yachi aspired to be as well!

Yes! She’ll do her best to learn during her time here at the training camp as well!

“You looked quite cute in all those jackets, Hitoka-chan,” Shimizu murmured quietly and Yachi looked in awe and shock at the sweet sounding voice. The younger girl ducked her head bashfully.

“T-Thank you, s-sempai.”

“Though... I must say,” Shimizu continued, plucking one of the clips off the line in order to hang Asahi-san’s jersey. “Personally, I think Karasuno’s colors suit you best... don’t you think?”

For a moment, Yachi was speechless, which was then quickly followed by the pricking of her eyes as tears gathered in them. She forced them at bay and nodded wildly instead, turning away so that Shimizu-sempai didn’t see her flushed cheeks and the wetness in her eyes. All she could offer instead of a croaky, but firm “Yes!”

03. Cheerleader

HappyFace1886

Yachi watched nervously as Kuroo mercilessly threw ball after ball at Lev, biting back a whimper each time she tossed the ball to Kuroo to spike at Lev. It was after the usual practice matches with the other team and while she’d occasionally go to Karasuno to help Kageyama-kun and Hinata-kun with their still-incomplete spike, she’d occasionally let Takeda-sense take the reins so that she could provide assistance to Nekoma.

It never failed to send shivers down her spine whenever she saw the sharp, feline smile on Kuroo’s face.

“No more... no more... no more...” Lev groaned from the floor and Yachi half wondered if he was drowning in his own sweat. “Kuroo-sempai... you’re a monster.”

“Tch, you just still have a lot to learn,” Kuroo swung his shoulder around to loosen the overused muscles. They were going to have to switch back to tossing gentler receives at each other or else he was going to lose his shoulder by tomorrow. “How the hell do you plan on competing with those on national level when you can’t handle a simple receive?”

Lev replied with a muffled whimper from the floor. He struggled to look up and managed to lock eyes with Yachi, who barely stifled a sound of surprise. “Yachi-saaaaan, Kuroo-sempai is being unnecessarily cruel.”

Kuroo twitched, a throbbing vein forming on his head. “Oi, don’t bring her into this.”

The half-Russian boy rolled himself onto his back, panting harshly while giving Yachi a pitiful look. “I think I’ll be able to get up if Yachi-san cheers for me.”

“...eh?!” honey brown eyes gawked at Lev while Kuroo stiffened at that. What the hell was the idiot playing at now? “L-Lev-san?”

“Neesan told me that when a cute girl cheers for a guy, the guy will be able to summon unimaginable powers.” Lev said from the floor, looking pleadingly at her. “Yamamoto-sempai also said the same thing! He said if a cute girl was to cheer for him, he could even make it to Nationals. I need that strength right now to survive Kuroo-sempai’s cruelty!”

Kuroo’s fingers dug into the volleyball in his hand. He had half a mind to swing that thing right into Lev’s prone body. If it wasn’t for the fact that that guy was actually a half-decent player, a diamond in the rough mind you, then he’d have already spiked the ball onto his obviously empty head. “Lev.”

“K-Kuroo-sempai!” Lev’s eyes widened slightly. “Y-Your eyes are kind of scaring me!”

“Because you’re an idiot,” Kuroo said with a sigh, tossing the ball behind him. It wouldn’t do to have it in his hand since it was much too tempting to do something violent with it. He them resumed his usual Cheshire smile, turning to Yachi, who jumped at having his attention on her. As always, it felt like a predatory cat ready to lunge at a tiny fledgling bird and she had to bite back an instinctive whimper. “Still, it would be interesting to see if that theory holds any merit.”

“Eh?!” Yachi fumbled with the ball she was holding. “B-But I-I-!”

“Pleeaaasseee Yachi-san?” Lev pleaded from the floor.

“I... um... w-well...” Yachi clutched the ball tighter, nearly pressing it against her lips. Their expectant gazes felt heavy on her and made it even harder for her to speak. When she was finally able to force her voice out, the words came out softly while her cheeks were flushed a vibrant shade of pink. “...y-you... you can do it...”

The words came out so quietly that Lev and Kuroo could barely catch it with their ears, but it was more than enough to make Kuroo’s heart clench and he had to physically resist the urge to clutch onto his heart at such a timid, adorable sound.

Lev laughed from the floor. “Yachi-san is really cute!”

“Eep!”

“Yachi-san, please! Say it again, say it again!” Lev swung his long legs so that he could bounce onto his feet. He then clamored over to the shorter girl, almost making her dizzy by running and jumping circles around her. “Again! One more time!”

“Oi, idiot!” Kuroo snapped.

“What’s going on in here?” from the entrance, Yaku and Yamamoto entered the gym, walking into the scene of Kuroo with a menacing aura around him and a flustered Yachi trapped in the whirlwind created by Lev.

“Yachi-san was acting as my personal cheerleader so that I can energize myself for Kuroo-san’s recei-guck!” the rest of the words were choked on as Kuroo’s spike ended up digging into Lev’s gut.

“Too slow,” Kuroo snapped. “Pay attention and be on guard!”

“Are you telling me that you made a cute girl like Yachi-san cheer for you?” Yamamoto pointed an offending finger at Lev, a burst of hostile aura exploding around him. He then ran to grab the nearest fallen volleyball. “Kuroo-san, allow me to assist you in helping this idiot with his receives! How dare you get Yachi-san to cheer for you when your sempai has never... has never gotten any cheers from a cute girl at all?! Woooooaaaaaaaah!!!!!!”

Tears were erupting in the air as Yamamoto mercilessly spiked ball after ball at Lev, who was more or less running away from them than instead of returning them.

Yaku also twitched from his place. The idiots were making a fool of themselves again and how dare Lev harass Yachi-san again? Not only was it unbecoming of someone of Nekoma (and a regular human being at that), what the hell was Karasuno going to do to them once they found out they were harassing Yachi-san? He turned to the flustered young girl and gave a sharp, apologetic bow. “I’m so sorry Yachi-san! I’ll go join the others to punish that dumbass right now!”

“Huh? N-No, wait, i-it’s okay!” her cries fell on deaf years as now three sempais were mercilessly making spikes at Lev, who was now using all of his physical prowess not to get hit by them. She wanted to fall onto her knees and cry. Ahh, this was all her fault.

Could she not do a single thing right?!

Omake 01

“Ohoho?” Yachi trembled as a tall boy with wild grayish-black hair sauntered over towards her, a curious gleam in his sharp eyes as he took in her appearance. Oddly enough, he reminded her of a bird of prey locking onto its target. From behind the boy, a nicer, albeit blasé, looking boy with black hair looked on with thinly veiled exasperation. Apparently they had company this time when Yachi and Kuroo had arrived at the gym to practice receives with Lev. “Ohohoho?”

“Ah!” Yachi quickly gave a deep bow, recognizing the Fukurodani ace and his setter. “M-My name is Yachi H-Hitoka! I’m the manager in training for K-K-Karasuno and the t-temporary manager on l-loan to Nekoma! Pleased to meet you!”

“I remember you! You’re that girl who’s even tinier than chibi-chan!” Bokuto remarked cheerfully, sounding a bit in awe while Kuroo sagely nodded from beside them. He still hadn’t forgotten their adventure at the convenience store, both how tiny and weightless she’d been when he picked her up and how she’d literally been swimming in his jacket when he’d lent it to her.

“C-Chibi-chan?” Yachi looked up at them in confusion.

“Our little nickname for Hinata,” Kuroo supplied.

“O-Oh, I seee-kyah!” Kuroo’s eyes widened in surprise and Akaashi’s eyes widened in horror when Bokuto, without warning, suddenly scooped his hands underneath Yachi’s arms and lifted her into the air. The tiny blonde froze in terror while Bokuto literally began to swing her around like a little doll.

“Whoaa! You’re so tiny!” Bokuto marveled with a loud, rambunctious laugh. “And so light!”

“Isn’t she? Isn’t she?” Lev agreed enthusiastically from behind. Bokuto-san was so amazing! He was doing the exact thing Lev had been tempted to do the moment he’d met Yachi. “I’m next! I want to carry Yachi-san around as well!”

“Waaahhh!” Yachi cried as Bokuto continued spinning around.

There was a loud sound of bone popping as Akaashi cracked his knuckles. An ominous air surrounded him as the Fukurodani setter eyed the idiot Owl that was excitedly leaping into the air with Yachi crying out in terror. It was one thing for Bokuto-san to be fooling around in court, but it was another to be harassing an innocent girl of all people. “Kuroo-san... a ball, if you’d please.”

“GAH!” Bokuto’s cry of pain echoed throughout the entire gymnasium as a hard spike was aimed at his head.

Omake 02

Tsukishima walked towards gym after their usual day practice, mentally preparing himself for Bokuto-san’s usual overbearing personality and Kuroo-san’s overly sly nature. It was much easier dealing with them one by one, but obviously, those two weren’t going to give him such an opportunity. He only tolerated them because they offered good advice and practice during their free practice period. However, he hesitated outside the door when he didn’t hear the usual sounds of volleyballs thundering into the ground. Instead, his ear twitched at the sound of... awe?

“Whooa, I can’t get over how tiny you are!” Bokuto marveled openly.

The tall blonde came to an abrupt stop at the scene that lay before him inside of the gym.

Yachi looked as though she was going to faint from how heated her face was while a few feet away, Akaashi was covering his face with his hand, obviously having lost control over what was happening in the gym. Surrounding Yachi was Lev and Bokuto, both sporting identical bumps on their heads where the volleyball had hit them, looking with sparkling eyes at Yachi, who stood between them, wearing a Fukurodani team jacket that was obviously several sizes too big for her. Kuroo stood several feet away, his own hand covering his face. Though unlike Akaashi who couldn’t handle the sight of two freakishly tall boys basically cornering a scared petite girl, for Kuroo, it was more like the adorable image had been too much for him and he couldn’t look anymore. Not that he’d ever admit that out loud.

Tsukishima twitched and let out a deadpanned remark. “You’re all perverts.”

******

Next day

The first match of the day was listed as Fukurodani vs. Karasuno.

Akaashi looked on warily as a dark, black miasma seemed to be emitting from Karasuno’s volleyball team. Ah, so Tsukishima had reported to the others of what had transpired at the gym last night. Meanwhile, Bokuto looked oblivious, bounding over cheerfully to Akaashi. “Hey, hey, hey, ready for another day of my awesome spikes?”

“Bokuto-san...”

“What is it, Akaashi?”

“I’d dodge more today if I were you.”

“Hm? Why’s that?”

“KARASUNO FIGHT!!!” Daichi’s roar echoed throughout the entire gymnasium and all eyes seemed to whip towards the ‘fallen champions’ who appear to be reverberating with bloodlust. From a ways away, Lev looked on with sparkling eyes, oblivious as to why the entire Karasuno team looked so pissed. If anything, he felt awed and inspired by such powerful fighting spirit. Kuroo had to resist the urge to chuck the volleyball at the back of Lev’s head.

“Um... did something happen last night?” Takeda-sensei nervously asked Ukai. “The boys seem more fired up than usual.”

“Erm... not really sure,” Ukai rubbed the back of his neck, looking rather confused himself. Was he just imagining things or was Shimizu also clutching onto Yachi’s shoulder, keeping the younger girl in place while also giving a sharp glare at the Fukurodani ace?

Meanwhile, Yachi wanted to cry from mortification and horror at the misunderstanding. Ahh, this was all her fault. She’d been weak and given in when Bokuto and Lev had enthusiastically encouraged her to try on Bokuto’s jacket. No amount of threatening could distract the two from their goal and so she’d relented, hoping that once she wore it, they’d finally grow bored of it and practice already. It was just unfortunate that Tsukishima walked in at that very moment.

This was going to be a long day of practice...

It was a known fact that it was rare, or next to impossible, for Yachi to ever initiate physical contact. The most she’d go for is to hold hands and maybe a modest hug in public. Not that Kuroo ever really minded. He loved drawing out those flustered reactions from her, but even more, he loved the way she’d never protest that much and would shyly lean into his touches instead. Still, it was a nice and warm feeling whenever Yachi would initiate on her own and was something that was never unwelcomed. And so, when Kuroo felt the slightest tug on the back of his jacket and saw the demure blush on Yachi’s face, he felt as though his heart was going to explode with excitement.

Others might have frozen at the sudden pressure, at the unfamiliarity of such contact, but Kuroo was only more than eager for his kiss. It was rare for her to ask, especially outside where everyone could see, so why would he complain?

There was the slightest squeak as he pulled Yachi closer, his arms wrapped around her waist as he lifted her up slightly. Despite both having long since graduated from their respective colleges, she was still slightly shorter than him. There was a playful smile on his face as he pressed his lips against hers, withholding a laugh when he saw through hooded eyes her mortified flushed cheeks. However, her body belied her reactions, the way she’d remain content in his arms, completely relaxed and at ease.

When he pulled away, he felt her clutch onto his shoulders. There was the slightest pout on her lips, her voice near inaudible as she spoke shyly. Kuroo smiled teasingly and drew her in even closer. “What was that?”

Yachi hesitated only slightly before whispering daintily. “...more.”

“Are you sure?” he teased. “There are a lot of people watching.”

For a minute, he thought she’d back down, her panicked eyes flitting to and fro around the busy airport. But to his pleasant surprise, Yachi only nodded her head vigorously. She then gave him a warm smile, the one reserved only for him. “I missed you, Tetsuro.”

He blinked, taken aback by her blunt honesty, before he chuckled. “Well, it has been a few weeks since we last saw each other.”

“I don’t like it when you take business trips,” she grumbled slightly and squeaked when he abruptly gave her a firm kiss. Kuroo pulled back and almost laughed at her flustered face, running his lips against her heated cheeks before kissing her again.

“How many kisses are you demanding as compensation then?” he inquired huskily, his darkened eyes watching her carefully while his hot breath brushed against her lips.

Her eyes goggled at his audacious words, obviously taken aback by such a direct question. “I-I... erm... t-that is... I-.”

“Hitoka,” Kuroo purred and she shivered at the way her name seemed to roll pleasantly over his tongue. Kuroo was certainly not the first person outside of her family to call her by her given name, but there was always a dark undertone in the way he’d call out to her, as though he was savoring the taste of her name in his mouth. It drew her in with the warmth and intensity... and always easily caused her to become flustered and scatterbrained.

Like right now!

“H-However many you’re willing to give!” Yachi rushed out the words, only to immediately berate herself for saying something so stupid. She clenched her eyes shut and lamented on her idiocy. What was that supposed to mean anyway? However, there was no response from Kuroo and after a few heat-pounding moments more, Yachi slightly opened her eyes. The gasp was stifled as air became trapped in her throat. There was a glow in Kuroo’s sharp eyes, the predatory intent clear in both his rigid posture and his penetrating gaze.

“Well then,” Kuroo gave her his trademark mischievous smile that never failed to tug at her heartstrings while he spoke in a low tenured voice, “we’ve got a long night ahead of us.”
